CANDIDATE FOR florida's 23rd congressional district

Tim Canova is running as an Independent in the race to represent the people of Florida's 23rd congressional district. Tim earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and was a Swedish Institute Visiting Scholar at the University of Stockholm. He has written critically about deregulation of the financial industry since the early 1980's, and worked on a range of regulatory and human rights issues as a legislative aid to U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas (D-MA). Tim is committed to running his campaign on small-donor support, calling his opponent, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, ‘the quintessential corporate machine politician.'

"Tim remains a leading critic of the Federal Reserve and Wall Street, opposes the corrupting influence of corporate money in politics, and is a strong advocate for programs to help students, working families, and lower- and middle-income folks." His progressive platform focuses on restoring democracy, reversing income and wealth inequality, and addressing climate change by transitioning to sustainable, clean energy sources to power the future.

"The U.S. is one of only a small handful of democracies around the world that does not have publicly financed elections. We must separate corporate treasuries from public elections, and implement a transparent system of publicly-financed campaigns that amplifies small donations. Candidates for federal elections should be given free TV and cable airtime. After all, the public owns the airwaves, and TV and cable companies have benefited from billions of dollars in public subsidies. Candidates should not have to sell out to special interests in order to raise money to pay these huge media corporations just to communicate with voters."
